Flat bed semi truck carrying excavator hits bridge in Atwater

Expect delays while traveling State Route 99 northbound at the Applegate Road overpass. Damage has been caused to the overpass from an apparent overheight issue.

The Collision occurred at approximately 6:40am according to CHP officer Zuniga, a 2013 Kenworth semi towing an excavator on a flat bet trailer driven by Charles McMahan 34 year-old out of Atwater traveling on the #1 lane of NB SR 99 South of Applegate Dr.

The excavator’s boom arm was at an upright position, well over the 15 feet 1 in height requirement. The boom arm collided on the over cross bridge of Applegate as the semi attempted to go under it. No injuries were reported or DUI suspected. The freeway remains open but expect traffic at this time. The overpass remains closed

*A reminder to all motorists that the maximum height in California is 14′ unless permitted otherwise. Estimates for the delay are roughly 5-6 hours while Cal-Trans inspects the structural integrity of the overpass. Try to find alternate routes if possible.
