18-year-old arrested after high speed chase, police say

According to the Gustine Police Department, On February 10th, 2020, at approximately 2:00 a.m, Officer Roseen was conducting extra patrol in the area of South Avenue and Linden avenue in a marked Gustine Police Vehicle, when the officer observed a vehicle driving Eastbound South Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Officer Roseen got behind the vehicle to attempt a vehicle stop when Officer Roseen observed the vehicle continue at a high rate of speed Eastbound Meredith Avenue.

The vehicle then made a right hand turn onto Sycamore Avenue at a high rate of speed. As Officer Roseen was going to activate his emergency lights for the stop, Officer Roseen observed the driver of the vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign on Sycamore Avenue and Meredith avenue and collided into a light pole.

18-year-old Jose Pantoja and a passenger (female) fled on foot from the vehicle. Pantoja ran eastbound on Meredith Avenue towards West Avenue and the female passenger ran westbound towards Laurel Avenue. Officer Roseen then pursued Pantoja westbound on foot and was able to capture Pantoja without further incident.

During the investigation, officers discovered that Pantoja was an unlicensed driver and during an inventory of the vehicle, Officer Roseen discovered an assault rifle with no serial numbers and 4 loaded high capacity magazines. Pantoja was transported and booked at the Merced County Jail for his listed charges.
