A multi-agency response unfolded in Merced on Wednesday at around 2:00pm, after a semi-truck became stuck in a canal area, knocking down multiple light poles and sparking a small fire in a residential neighborhood.
According to radio traffic from the Merced Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of South N Street and Gerard Avenue after reports that a big rig had become stuck near a canal.
Initial information indicates the truck got stuck in electrical wires and knocked down several light poles. Some of the fallen poles reportedly landed on nearby homes, causing concern among residents.
Emergency personnel from the Merced Police Department, Merced County agencies, and the California Highway Patrol including PG&E responded to the scene to assess the situation and secure the area.
Authorities say the crash also ignited a small fire along a fence line. Residents in the neighborhood were able to quickly put out the flames before firefighters arrived, preventing further damage.
The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Officials have not yet released information regarding the extent of damage to the homes and infrastructure. The incident remains under investigation.
