Road rage in Merced leads to stabbing and shots fired, this is what police say

A person was stabbed in Merced after a road rage incident, 18-year-old Jeremiah Castillo was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, police say.

Officers responded to the area of State Route Highway 59 and West Santa Fe Drive at around 3:00 Wednesday afternoon for reports of a stabbing.

While officers were en route, a report of shots fired was made at the same location. Police say a witness followed one of the involved vehicles and was located by officers in the area of West 18th Street and V Street.

Officers stopped the vehicle and detained  Jeremiah Castillo pending the investigation.

When officers arrived at the scene at Highway 59, they located five bullet casings on Santa Fe West of Highway 59.

A short time later, another call came in for a stabbing victim at Mercy Medical center. Officers and detectives responded to the hospital confirming the stabbing victim was the other involved party.

Upon interviewing all parties and witnesses it appeared as though this issue stemmed from a road rage incident. Castillo and the victim confronted one another at the intersection where Castillo stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

The victim then retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired rounds at Castillo. The knife and firearm involved were recovered following the investigation.

The victim was treated for non-life-threatening wounds. Castillo was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail.
