New roundabout to open in Merced, this is the location

Per Merced County

A new roundabout will open this Friday, June 11 at the intersection of Campus Parkway and Olive Avenue.

Traffic will only flow east and west at the intersection while Segment III of Campus Parkway is under construction. Temporary delineation will be in place to ensure proper traffic flow. Segment III, which extends the expressway from Highway 140 to Yosemite Avenue, is more than 70 percent complete at this time.

Next week, a portion of Yosemite Avenue (between Lake and Kibby roads) will be closed to through traffic as crews begin work on another roundabout where it intersects with Campus Parkway.

A detour will be available during the closure, which is expected to last from Monday, June 14 until Friday, August 13.

Studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than more traditional stop sign or traffic-signal controlled intersections, resulting in a significant reduction in vehicle collisions, pedestrian collisions, injuries and fatalities. They also reduce delays and congestion while improving the flow of traffic.

As a reminder, when entering any roundabout:
• Reduce your speed;
• Yield to any pedestrians or bicyclists that may be crossing the roadway;
• Follow all roadway signage;
• Enter the roundabout (heading to the right) when there is a large enough gap to merge safely;
• Travel in a counter-clockwise direction;
• Do not stop or pass other vehicles;
• Signal when you exit the roundabout;
• If you miss your exit, continue around until you return to your exit.
