Police arrest man responsible for shooting five juveniles in Merced

On February 4th, 2020, Merced Police Department Detectives were able to identify a suspect in the shooting of five juveniles that originally occurred on January 30, 2020.

Detective Pinnegar was able to secure a search warrant for a residence in the 100 block of West Main Street and an arrest warrant for five counts of attempted homicide on the suspect, Daniel Mays.

The Merced Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit executed the search warrant at around 2:30 P.M., SWAT Officers were able to take Mays into custody without incident.

Mays was turned over to detectives to be interviewed. A search was conducted of Mays’s residence where some items of evidence were collected.

The firearm is still outstanding and was not located at this time. Mays was later booked into Merced County Jail for the five counts of attempted homicide warrant.

Originally officers located four juvenile victims at the scene of the shooting. A fifth juvenile has since come forward and sustained a non-life threatening injury during the shooting.

Detectives are still working on establishing a motive for the shooting. Detectives have not ruled out the possibility this may be gang related.

  1. Merced PD is lost with no answers to all the violence in town has incarcerated an innocent man a kind man respectful person their just being crooked cops for the time being believe me they’ll let him out they know he ain’t the one .
